On June 8, 2010, the community is invited to an update on the on-going design process and to meet with the architects and project leaders of the Peace Island Medical Center.
Mahlum, a Seattle-based architectural and engineering firm, has been selected to design the new Peace Island Medical Center. Mahlum, which has ties to the San Juan Islands, has extensive experience in the design of healthcare facilities and sustainable architecture tailored to the settings and cultures of individual communities.
Design work will begin immediately and will include opportunities for engaging the community in the design process. The design phase of the project is expected to continue through 2010 with construction beginning in 2011 and opening of the facility scheduled for the end of summer, 2012.
Application approval has been received for the Certificate of Need from the State of Washington Department of Health for the creation of the Peace Island Medical Center. This is an important milestone in the development of the new medical center for San Juan Island and was necessary before design and construction could begin. The Certificate of Need is essential to attaining the designation of a Critical Access Hospital for the new facility.
FRIDAY HARBOR – A newly renovated mammogram imaging facility, retrofitted to provide San Juan Island’s first digital mammography, was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting today at the Inter Island Medical Center (IIMC) in Friday Harbor.
The mammography facilities at IIMC were upgraded and will be operated by Mount Baker Imaging (MBI), a joint venture of PeaceHealth St. Joseph Hospital and Northwest Radiologists (NWR), both of Bellingham. The facility is scheduled to begin providing digital imaging on Monday, Aug. 24 at the IIMC at 550 Spring St.
This imaging upgrade and PeaceHealth partnership is intended to help provide safe, evidence-based compassionate care for San Juan Island residents.
PeaceHealth officials announced today they have signed a purchase agreement on a 22-acre site near Friday Harbor Airport where they plan to build a new Integrated Medical Center and Critical Access Hospital, scheduled to open in the summer of 2012.
PeaceHealth and the San Juan County Public Hospital District #1 (Hospital District) in March approved a long-term agreement to significantly expand on-island healthcare services for Hospital District residents and Island visitors. The 50-year contract calls for PeaceHealth to build a new, fully Integrated Medical Center located in Friday Harbor, including a new, expanded primary care and specialty clinic, expanded diagnostic services center, a 24-hour emergency room, and a 10-bed Critical Access Hospital.
Friday Harbor, Wash. – PeaceHealth has appointed Jim Barnhart to lead the planning and implementation phase of building and operating a new Integrated Medical Center at Friday Harbor.
Jim Barnhart has served for nearly two decades as the CEO and Chief Mission Officer of PeaceHealth's Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence, Oregon. Under Barnhart's leadership, this Critical Access Hospital and its PeaceHealth Medical Group physicians have consistently achieved excellent clinical and service outcomes for their patients and community.
On March 18, 2009 the San Juan County Public Hospital District #1 Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a long-term service contract with PeaceHealth, a Northwest-based not-for-profit healthcare system, to significantly expand healthcare services for San Juan County Hospital District residents and Island visitors. The PeaceHealth Board of Directors approved the contract last week.
The contract is the first step in the creation of a new, fully Integrated Medical Center (IMC) located in Friday Harbor. The IMC will provide expanded primary care and specialty clinics, more diagnostic services, 24-hour emergency service and limited inpatient care in a small Critical Access Hospital.
After the San Juan County Public Hospital District #1 Board and the Board of PeaceHealth signed a Letter of Intent in May, 2008, detailed discussions were begun.
