WHERE MIGHT A NEW, INTEGRATED MEDICAL CENTER BE LOCATED AND WHAT MIGHT IT LOOK LIKE?
A study of the current medical center initiated by the San Juan Island Hospital District #1 Commissioners occurred in the fall of 2007. It was recommended by the consultants who did the study, that the Hospital Board consider alternate sites to build a new, integrated medical center since the current IIMC and the site cannot easily or economically be expanded. Other possible sites are therefore being investigated. The Port of Friday Harbor has also participated in site discussions, relating to its mission of supporting community economic development. While possible centrally located sites (including near the airport) have been investigated, no decisions have yet been made regarding any specific property.
Wherever the new facility may be built however, it would be designed to be compatible with its setting and the character of the Island. It would be a low rise facility carefully planned to serve the community for decades to come, with flexibility to adapt to changing medical needs and technology. And it would be built at a cost the community could afford.
